How would you feel if you had to hunt for another of your kind? If you had to search for an enemy from a different clan before he wipes out yours even though he’s of the same race as you? You could watch the two clans go against each other in war. Or you could hunt down the soon-to-be leader of the opposite clan and take him down to avoid the war. The book Hunters of the Dusk by Daren Shan is a well-written book, with good description, and a great story line.
Hunters of the Dusk uses good description. For example, the author describes a character on one page by writing, “She was the ugliest most unkempt woman I'd ever seen…her nose was tiny, it looked like she had just two holes above her upper lip…she was extraordinarily hairy. Her arms and legs were covered with black hair." Daren Shan uses words like extraordinarily and unkempt to show how the character, Evanna, looks. Words similar to these are used to give the feel of how other specific characters look and act. Another character he describes as, “reddish skin and green dyed hair wearing purple animal skins that had been stitched together crudely…. Though he squinted painfully in the sunlight I recognized who he was.” When the author describes the characters looks/expressions like when he writes “he squinted painfully,” it helps you mentally visualize how that character looks at the moment.
The description in the book was good but what kept me entertained was the story line. Hunters of the Dusk is book seven in a series of nine. This particular book ties up a lot of things that happened in the previous stories. Unlike the previous books in this series, the author refers to things from books one, three, and four. The only way possible to truly understand these references is to read all the other books. Also, in the other books he spontaneously talks about something else for a chapter and then goes back to continuing the character’s adventure. This makes it hard to read. Most people don’t just read the words that are on the page, they actually imagine the scene while it is taking place in the book. Hunters of the Dusk is more interesting, entertaining, and a better read because the author stays on track of the story line better.
The book Hunters of the Dusk is a well-written book, with good description, and a great story line. This book is written so well that it raises the bar from the previous books. Sense his next book will be expected to be written this well, it will seem boring if it isn’t, even if it’s written in the same style as the other books. Then again he could write the next book as well and in the same style as Hunters of the Dusk and it could be an amazingly fantastic book. Nobody can know for sure, though, until they read the next book.
